本章小结
土地似水，农民如鱼，海阔凭鱼跃。庄园经济的瓦解预示着封建制度赖以存在的经济基础已经发生了质的改变，那么新的上层建筑必然会随着新的经济基础的形成而相伴随生长。新经济基础的生成有赖于新的生产方式的普遍施行。而新的生产方式——替代庄园经济——摆脱人身依附的自由耕作与土地经营的生产模式应运而生。主宰这一生产模式的操盘手主要就是富裕的农民约曼。
新生产方式下，旧的生产关系被打破，新的生产关系渐次生成。旧有的复杂的带有王室封建色彩和人身依附的各种人与人之间的关系也被打破，代之以新的更简单也更加赤裸裸的物质利益的人与人之间关系——金钱关系——逐渐形成。衡量人们社会地位及人与人之间关系的首要因素不是贵族的头衔、王室的封号以及高贵的血统，而是你所拥有的经济实力——经济资源如土地等动产与不动产——可直接支配的有多少。在乡村拥有土地的多寡成了身份地位的最重要也是最明显最易辨识的标准。土地也就成了广大英国乡村各阶层成员竞相追逐的首要物质目标。而传统的乡村平民能够拥有的和贵族有着沾亲带故关系的尊号“约曼”，也就由原来的封建色彩与内涵演变成了经济的外在形象与内在本质，最终能否拥有这一尊号被拥有经济资源——土地——的多寡决定了。富裕农民不但有了几十上百英亩土地的身家，还获得了“约曼”这样一个尊号。数量众多的富裕农民遍及全国各地，成了英国庄园经济瓦解，举国步入转型之路的最大的推动力量和受益群体。所以，在经济地位上他们是富裕的农民，而在社会地位上这些后来者，成了乡村中受人尊敬的约曼。所以今天看来，赋予他们一个准确的称呼应该是：富裕农民。因而他们也是英国转型变革历程中最积极最热情的支持者和巨大的动力来源。
我们要注意的是，在英国中世纪庄园经济逐渐解体，乡村“富裕农民”这一新的阶层的形成过程中，有着其结构成分上的复杂性和生成过程上的漫长性。在农村的亲自参与经营耕作土地的持有土地阶层中，包括了自由佃农即自由土地持有者，习惯佃农即公簿持有农，租地持有农，这是发展成为富裕农民的主要来源。在庄园经济时代这些人有的有人身自由，如自由佃农即自由土地持有者，前身有的较有社会地位，就是约曼；有的依附于庄园主，如习惯佃农，包括维兰和农奴；租地持有农是庄园解体后的产物，和土地之间靠租地契约产生责任与义务的关系。在庄园经济瓦解后，他们或租或买用不同的方式逐步拥有土地，聚集着财富，成为乡村中持有土地的富裕阶层，最终衡量他们的标准就是拥有土地财富的多少。乡村富裕农民的形成，既是上述各个身份的农民不断发展演变合流而来，但也是经历了一个较长时期渐渐形成了农村的新阶层。他们合流而成为富裕农民的过程，经历着摆脱原有身份，打破原先中世纪对他们原有社会身份的定位，在社会上逐步形成新的以财富为唯一标准的新的界定，再加之他们依靠财富地位逐步取得了相应的社会地位如治安法官、济贫官等之后，使他们的经济实力与社会地位的结合并获得了“约曼”这原先对贵族骑士之下有自由并稍有财产受人尊敬者的称呼，不过赋予了新的内涵。
随着富裕农民对土地的辛勤耕耘与经营，“看不见的手”开始发挥作用，对于遵循规律者给予经济效益的回报；土地的集中，大农场的出现，乡村物产的商品化，产品交易的市场化，农业资本主义市场经济建立起来，英国乡村的农业资本家们俨然登场了。
